Christiane Benner is set to become the first woman at the helm of IG Metall. Her goal is to safeguard industrial jobs and transform Germany’s companies.
SShe knows the question and she doesn’t particularly like it. How difficult was it for a woman to establish herself in the male-dominated world of IG Metall and rise to the top? On October 23rd, Christiane Benner, a 55-year-old sociologist from Hesse, is set to be elected as the first chairwoman of IG Metall at the union conference in Frankfurt. She will be the first woman to hold this position in the union’s more than 130-year history, making it the largest union in the world.
Die Metall- und Elektroindustrie ist männlich. 80 Prozent der Mitarbeiter in den Betrieben sind Männer, auch wenn in der IG Metall der Anteil der weiblichen Funktionäre größer ist. Seit 2011 hat die Gewerkschaft für hauptamtliche Angestellte eine interne Frauenquote von 30 Prozent. Auch Benner ist eine starke Befürworterin von Frauenquoten im Berufsleben.
