The German government is considering entering the submarine shipyard Marine Systems in the defense industry.

Die Bundesregierung erwägt einen Einstieg bei der Kieler U-Boot-Werft Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). „Wir überlegen das“, sagte Verteidigungsminister Boris Pistorius (SPD) am Rande eines Besuchs in Kiel. Die Überlegungen seien aber noch nicht abgeschlossen.

The marine company TKMS aims to become independent. Shipyard CEO Oliver Burkhard previously stated that „an autonomous Marine Systems is a better way forward: for Thyssenkrupp, TKMS, for our customers, for Berlin, and therefore for Germany.“

Das Rüstungsunternehmen beschäftigt allein in Kiel rund 3.100 Menschen und ist nach eigenen Angaben weltweit führend beim Bau konventioneller U-Boote. Dem Vernehmen nach scheinen bei einer Beteiligung der Bundesregierung mehrere Varianten möglich: Der Einstieg von Fremdkapitalgebern (Private Equity), ein Börsengang oder Teilbörsengang oder ein Einstieg des Staates.

TKMS hat bereits Deutschland und Norwegen als Kunden.

Germany has ordered two new boats, while Norway has already ordered four. Additionally, Germany has a purchase option for four to six more submarines of the 212CD class.
