„Ivy betrachtete (Andrea) …

Susie Yang tells a paradoxical story. While prosperity is booming in the People’s Republic of China and people who were recently happy with a bicycle are now scouring catalogs for luxury items that momentarily place them at the top of the consumer competition, Chinese American migrants compete with other minorities for peripheral positions in the mainstream flow. They isolate themselves in ethnically defined communities. For Susie Yang’s heroine Ivy, it is always about escaping the confinement of her community and its ideologies. Ivy has always felt completely and wholly American since childhood.

Herkunftshorizont
Ivy grows up in Boston and New Jersey. She goes through a series of romantic disappointments within the circle of wealthy white candidates. There seems to be an obsessive fixation on the Irish-Catholic Kennedy type. At a party, she carefully observes the hostess’s interior design style. She notices the price tag on a plain wooden chair: $3950.
Ivy, a 26-year-old teacher, witnesses the competition held on Thursday, January 15, 2009, which is filled with high expectations. The Boston Celtics emerge victorious against the Brooklyn Nets with a score of 118:86.
Ivy hopes for a hug in the midst of the victory euphoria. Gideon remains reserved. However, he reluctantly accepts an invitation to a ski weekend.

The relationship is slowly gaining momentum. The extent to which Ivy and Gideon are socially distant becomes evident in a scene that functions like indirect illumination. Ivy wants to improve herself and therefore start studying law. She has to coordinate her ambition with her job. This surprises Gideon.
„It seems that he assumed she had the means to do whatever she wanted… as if she had not been working out of necessity all this time, but solely for the purpose of keeping herself occupied.“
„Was it the stereotypical allure of dating a man from the wrong side of the socioeconomic divide that fueled Sylvia’s hormones?“
„Ivy lost her virginity at the age of fourteen … engaging in sexual activity at that age was considered inappropriate.“
Expectations linger like odors in the rooms. Roux undermines the standards. Stoically, he refuses any compromise. He dismisses „wooden“ distinction and discretion.
„I cannot reword“
Siehe „Sprechen lernen“.
Herkunftshorizont
The narrator, who has a precarious social background, attends a middle-class school. The curriculum includes a social perspective that goes beyond her own background. Her ancestors were workers who were crushed by Manchester capitalism from a young age. The narrator explores markers of bourgeois distinction. She anticipates her future status through language. To understand the privileges and acquisitions, she turns to dialects. She distinguishes between southern and northern English accents. She knows that no one can completely erase the music box of their childhood language behind something artificial. And so, as a successful upward climber, she will always be bound by the parameters of her impoverished family background.
Aus der Ankündigung
Ivy Lin is an incredibly talented liar. However, no one would ever suspect that. Ivy’s lies allow her to leave her unwanted past behind and slip into a life that is wealthier and much more beautiful than her own. No one embodies this future that she craves more than Gideon Speyer. And so, with every lie, Ivy works towards finally becoming Gideon’s wife. Until suddenly, a man from her past appears and questions her entire life. He alone has the power to shake Ivy’s web of lies. Yet, Ivy cannot resist him.
