Anton has a love for weapons and tools, not just guns and pistols, but also halberds and swords, hammer drills and chisels. He occasionally carries a Colt on his own property, wearing an authentic Texan hip holster that is admired by his American friend Brad, who is a true redneck. Anton’s property is considered sacred to him and his family, although the tax authorities see it as a simple immigrant farm that Anton has repurposed. For the past ten years, he has been engaged in a nasty exchange of written correspondence with the mayor of the neighboring town over this matter. Anton, who struggles with dyslexia, fears written words more than anything else. He prefers dictating and does so frequently, as he cannot even write a shopping list. It is already decided that Navin, who is currently ten years old, will soon assist in securing the family fortress as a scribe.
Anton appears as a fearless boundary-crosser of community comments. The Westphalian giant (resembling Curt Jürgens; think Normannischer Kleiderschrank) stomps through the land of Swabian dwarves like Gulliver. Navin is his favorite witness whenever he breaks the creature’s neck. Earlier, Anton drowned a litter of kittens in the rain barrel. Navin is hardly deterred by the grandfather’s rough manner. He hasn’t even flinched in a long time. Bravely, he follows in Anton’s footsteps like wearing oversized rubber boots behind the berserker.
Anton emphasizes resilience. „What doesn’t kill us, makes us stronger.“
No, Navin’s grandfather is not an old person who is struggling with his last thread of life. Currently, he is making an effort to transition from the martial to the mental level. More on this tomorrow.
