A woman has accused British comedian and actor Russell Brand of exposing himself to her in 2008. The incident allegedly took place in the office building in Los Angeles where the BBC also has a studio, the broadcaster reported on Thursday. Minutes later, Brand reportedly made fun of the incident on his radio show.
Die Frau zeigte Brand damals nicht an. Die Leitung der BBC wurde den Angaben zufolge 2019 über den Vorfall informiert, zog aber keine Konsequenzen.
„I am ashamed,“ said the woman to the BBC. Additionally, she wondered if intervening earlier could have prevented further incidents. „Perhaps there would be fewer women who he has done terrible things to, which we now read about in the newspapers,“ she said.
A report has been received by the London police.
The British newspapers „Times“ and „Sunday Times“ and the television channel Channel 4 reported last Saturday, after joint investigations, on allegations of sexual violence against Brand. According to the reports, four women accuse the 48-year-old of raping, abusing, and exploiting them between 2006 and 2013. On Sunday, a report of sexual assault was also filed with the London police.
The former husband of US pop singer Katy Perry denied the allegations. While he did have frequently changing partners for a period of time, he claims that the sexual encounters were always consensual.
A spokesperson for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak described the accusations as „very serious and concerning“. Brand’s publisher, Bluebird, has suspended their collaboration with the comedian. He will also temporarily not receive any money for the views of his videos on YouTube.
Brand began his career as a comedian in the early 2000s. Between 2006 and 2013, when the alleged acts took place, he was at the peak of his fame: he worked for several British networks and appeared in Hollywood films, such as alongside US actress Kristen Bell in „Forgetting Sarah Marshall.“
