Rupert Murdoch, in a letter to the employees of the companies quoted by the BBC, stated that both the companies and himself are in good health. He expressed confidence in the future years and mentioned his intention to actively participate.
Murdoch gründete 1996 den Sender Fox News, heute der meistgesehene Nachrichtenkanal in den USA. Zu News Corp. zählen zahlreiche Zeitungsmarken in Großbritannien (»The Sun«, »The Times«), den USA (»Wall Street Journal«, »New York Post«) und Australien. Das Unternehmen ist mit einem Anteil von 49,9 Prozent an Sky Deutschland beteiligt.
Lachlan Murdoch stated in a Fox announcement about his father: „We are grateful that he will be available as an emeritus board member and will provide valuable advice to both companies.“ Rupert Murdoch announced to the employees that in his new role, he will „participate in the competition of ideas every day, I can guarantee that.“ The battle for freedom of speech and ultimately for freedom of thought has never been as intense as it is today.
In 1969, he entered the British market by purchasing the tabloid „News of the World“. His influential newspapers had an impact on British politics. For a long time, he was closely associated with Margaret Thatcher and her Tories, but his papers supported the Labour candidate Tony Blair in 1997. During the Brexit debate, they advocated for leaving the EU. In the 2010s, the News International newspapers were involved in a phone hacking scandal, which led to the closure of „News of the World“ in 2011.
Since the seventies, Rupert Murdoch has primarily resided in New York City. In the United States, Murdoch initially acquired smaller newspapers and then purchased the „New York Post“ in 1976. In 1984, he entered the film production company 20th Century Fox, which later gave rise to the Fox Network of television channels. The most politically significant among them is Fox News, the right-leaning news channel that is credited with playing a major role in the rise of Donald Trump.
Rupert Murdoch also allowed his son Lachlan, who will now succeed him, to take his first professional steps in Australia. Lachlan had an internship at the age of 18 and was appointed as the manager of Queensland Newspapers at 22. Lachlan Murdoch, born in 1971, is Rupert Murdoch’s eldest son. He worked in various positions within the corporation until 2005 when he unexpectedly left News Corp. Lachlan Murdoch operated television stations in Australia before returning to the Murdoch empire in 2014.
Rupert Murdoch has a total of six children. The question of his succession has been uncertain for a long time. The award-winning TV series „Succession,“ which revolves around the battle for succession in a media company, is inspired by Murdoch and his family.
