It plays an important role, serving not only as a supply route for bases but also forming the eastern border of the alliance with Russia, known as the Eastern flank. From September 9th to 23rd, the „Northern Coast“ large-scale exercise, led by the German Armed Forces, will take place here, off the coasts of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. Originally, the annual military exercises conducted since 2007 aimed to improve cooperation among the Baltic Sea countries. However, since the beginning of Russia’s aggressive war in Ukraine, the Baltic Sea has gained strategic importance, shifting the focus of this year’s maneuver to defense and ensuring the freedom of maritime routes to the Baltic states in case of an attack. According to the German Navy, the 14 participating nations will practice defense against threats „on, above, and below water, as well as from land.“ Hauke Friedrichs, security policy correspondent at ZEIT ONLINE, will report on the specifics of the naval exercise and potential reactions from Russia.
