Why this exhibition? „Because we have never been asked before how it was for us in the GDR,“ says Ruth Zadek. The visual artist is now 70 years old and emigrated to the West in 1981. She has gifted the exhibition A Different Country. Jewish in the GDR with the cover image: The slide from the 1950s shows her as a girl next to her cousin and holding her mother’s hand on Stalinallee (now Karl-Marx-Allee). Blue sky. Red flags. Colorful summer dresses. Hopeful faces looking into the camera.
