A book about shells has been chosen as the most beautiful German book of the year. The „Shell Reader“ by the small Berlin publisher Bom Dia Boa Tarde Boa Noite was awarded the „Prize of the Foundation for Book Art 2023“ in Frankfurt on Friday evening. It comes with a prize of 10,000 euros. A jury selected the book from the 25 „Most Beautiful German Books“ that emerged in June from a total of 603 submissions.

The book accompanies an installation made of several tons of shells by the Swedish sculptor Nina Canell. The jury praised the „incredibly beautiful overall concept“. Not only was the paper selection chosen to match the theme, but also the book’s layout and many other details were tailored to the artwork and its content, according to the jury: The endpaper shimmers like mother-of-pearl, the book pages feel like fabric, and the rough cut edges evoke thoughts of a shell.
