Airbus A320neo: Ein Pulver sorgt für Probleme

Probleme mit Triebwerken von Pratt & Whitney und MTU werden in den nächsten Jahren Hunderte Airbus-Jets zu einer Pause zwingen. Betroffen sind 600 bis 700 Triebwerke von Mittelstreckenflugzeugen der Modellfamilie A320neo. Sie müssen in der Zeit von 2024 bis 2026 zusätzlich in die Wartung, wie Pratt & Whitney-Mutter RTX und der Münchner Triebwerksbauer MTU am Montag in East Hartford und München mitteilten. Beide Unternehmen bereiten sich auf Belastungen in Milliardenhöhe vor. MTU stellte die eigene Umsatz- und Gewinnprognose für 2023 unter Vorbehalt.

The news did not go well at the stock exchange. The MTU stock lost over eleven percent in value as the biggest loser in the Dax in the afternoon. Since the beginning of the year, the stock has lost about eight percent. The RTX stock, which has already been struggling before, declined by almost seven percent on Monday. Since the beginning of the year, the stock’s loss has increased to 23 percent. On the other hand, the Airbus stock only lost about one percent and has still gained one-fifth of its value since the beginning of the year.

Belastung in Milliardenhöhe

Pratt & Whitney and MTU announced the material shortage at the end of July. It was stated that a total of approximately 1200 PW-1100G-JM geared fan engines of the affected type would need to undergo inspection due to the material shortage. 200 of them were planned to be taken out of service by mid-September. The manufacturers also intended to assess which engines could be inspected during an already scheduled check. RTX and MTU now estimate that due to these inspections, around 350 aircraft will have to remain grounded unexpectedly between 2024 and 2026.

Während Pratt & Whitney für seinen Teil des Geschäfts in den kommenden Jahren eine finanzielle Belastung von 3 bis 3,5 Milliarden US-Dollar erwartet, stellt sich MTU schon für 2023 auf eine Belastung von 1 Milliarde Euro beim Umsatz und beim Gewinn vor Zinsen und Steuern (Ebit) ein.

For comparison: The MTU board is currently aiming for a revenue of 6.1 to 6.3 billion euros and an adjusted earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) of over 800 million euros for 2023. This would be a record result for MTU. If the special burden caused by the material shortage and inspections reaches the mentioned one billion euros, the planned operating profit from day-to-day business would be more than offset. However, the impact on liquidity is expected to occur in the coming years, according to MTU.

Der Materialmangel ist nach früheren Angaben auf einen seltenen Fehler in der Zusammensetzung eines Metallpulvers zurückzuführen, das Pratt & Whitney für die Legierung des Metalls für Turbinenscheiben verwendet hat. MTU selbst hat dieses Pulver nach früheren Aussagen des Vorstands nicht eingesetzt.

The Munich-based manufacturer has an 18 percent stake in the engine model. Additionally, they operate one of three final assembly lines for the engine type, which is used in approximately every second Airbus A320neo model from the A320neo family. The remaining Airbus aircraft in this series are powered by engines from the French-American manufacturer CFM, a joint venture between Safran and General Electric. The A320neo jets and their longer variant, the A321neo, are best-selling models for Airbus.
