Azerbaijan condemns the election of the new president, labeling it as „illegal“ and „a clear violation“ of its „sovereignty and territorial integrity“. Turkey, which is allied with Azerbaijan, stated that it does not recognize „this unlawful election“. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ankara referred to the election as „a blatant violation of international law, including the resolutions of the UN Security Council and the OSCE principles“.
The European Union stated that it does not recognize the „constitutional and legal framework“ of the conducted vote. However, it also called on the residents of Nagorno-Karabakh to support a „de facto leadership“ that is capable and willing to engage in „outcome-oriented discussions“ with Azerbaijan.

Furthermore, it was stated that a prompt agreement on humanitarian aid for the people in Nagorno-Karabakh is now necessary.
Armenia has been in dispute with Azerbaijan over the Caucasus region of Nagorno-Karabakh since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The enclave, which is predominantly inhabited by Armenians, is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but it has declared independence. The conflict has resulted in several brief wars between the two former Soviet republics. Following a ceasefire mediated by Russia in 2020, Russian peacekeeping forces were deployed in the region.
