US-Wissenschaftler haben auf dem Meeresgrund des Pazifiks vor Alaska ein mysteriöses rundes Objekt entdeckt, von dem niemand weiß, was es ist. Das gold glänzende Objekt hat einen Durchmesser von über zehn Zentimetern und einen kleinen Riss an der Basis.
Meeresforscher, die ein ferngesteuertes Vermessungsfahrzeug nutzten, entdeckten es vergangene Woche in 3300 Metern Tiefe an einem Felsen im Golf von Alaska.
„When the cameras zoomed in, scientists speculated whether it could possibly be a dead sponge, a coral, or an eggshell,“ the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported. The discovery has since been referred to as the „golden ball“ or „golden egg,“ according to the agency.

While online services speculated whether it could be an egg from extraterrestrial beings, scientists retrieved the object from the seabed to examine it in the laboratory.
„We were able to recover and bring the ‚golden ball‘ onto the ship, but we are still unable to identify it,“ said the NOAA. It is unclear whether it belongs to a known species, represents a new species, or is an unknown life stage of an existing species, as stated by natural scientist and NOAA coordinator Sam Candio. The only certainty is that the discovery is of „biological origin.“
He added that the discovery demonstrates „how little we know about our own planet and how much we still need to learn about our ocean.“
