Dieses Dokument lässt an Deutlichkeit nichts zu wünschen übrig. 130 Filmschaffende aus aller Welt haben einen offenen Brief unterzeichnet, der scharfe Kritik am Verhalten von Kulturstaatsministerin Claudia Roth übt. Das meldet das US-Branchenblatt »Variety«. Vor wenigen Tagen war bekannt geworden, dass der Vertrag des künstlerischen Leiters Carlo Chatrian, offenbar entgegen anderslautender Zusagen, nicht verlängert werden soll.
Last Thursday, the responsible supervisory board of the Cultural Events of the Federal Government (KBB) agreed to return to the original artistic directorship model. Since 2019, there had been a dual leadership with Chatrian and Mariëtte Rissenbek as managing director. Rissenbek had previously announced her intention to resign from her position.
In dem offenen Brief setzen sich die Künstler dafür ein, dass Chatrians Vertrag doch verlängert wird. Der sei nicht unbedingt ein Showman, doch in seiner leisen Art hätten er und sein Team einen offenen und künstlerisch bereichernden kuratorischen Weg beschritten.
The letter does not hold back in criticizing Minister of State for Culture Roth. The first sentence reads: „We, a diverse group of filmmakers from all over the world who have deep respect for the Berlinale as a place for great cinema of all kinds, protest against the harmful, unprofessional, and immoral behavior of Minister of State Claudia Roth, who is forcing esteemed artistic director Carlo Chatrian to resign, despite promising to extend his contract.“
Zu den Unterzeichnenden gehören Martin Scorsese, Olivier Assayas und Joanna Hogg, aus Deutschland sind unter anderen Angela Schanelec und Christoph Hochhäusler dabei. Gegenüber »Variety« sagte Chatrian, er habe im März ein Treffen mit Roth gehabt, bei dem beschlossen worden sei, dass sein Vertrag verlängert werde. Die nun getroffene Entscheidung sei für ihn eine große Überraschung.
In July, it was announced that the Berlinale will undergo cost-cutting measures. Starting from 2024, there will be a significant reduction in the number of films shown, elimination of series and German newcomer sections, and merging of other sections.
