The Gates Foundation issues a warning that there is insufficient progress in the fight against maternal and child mortality. In an interview, Bill Gates discusses how the conflict in Ukraine hinders aid efforts in Africa and also shares how he continues to collaborate with his ex-wife since their divorce.
DThe Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is the largest private foundation in the world. Two years ago, it was shaken and thrown into uncertainty by the divorce of its two founders and namesakes. At that time, an exit clause was agreed upon for Melinda, in case the former couple concluded that they could no longer work together in the next two years. However, Melinda, now known as French Gates, recently announced that she will remain in the foundation. This means that the collaborative work with her former husband, the co-founder of Microsoft, will continue for the foreseeable future.
Jetzt hat die Organisation ihren jährlichen „Goalkeepers“-Bericht vorgelegt, der sich um die 17 sogenannten „Ziele für nachhaltige Entwicklung“ dreht. Er konzentriert sich diesmal auf Mütter- und Kindersterblichkeit, zwei Gebiete, auf denen sich die Fortschritte zuletzt verlangsamt haben und die für 2030 gesetzten Ziele nach gegenwärtigem Stand nicht erreicht werden. In dem Bericht werden kostengünstige Innovationen beschrieben, um die Welt wieder auf Kurs zu bringen, zum Beispiel zur Behandlung von Blutungen nach der Geburt oder zur Verhinderung von Infektionen. Nach Auffassung der Stiftung könnten mit diesen Mitteln bis zum Ende des Jahrzehnts zwei Millionen Leben von Müttern oder Babys gerettet werden.
